Certificates of insurance update

Earlier this month, Phenix Mutual announced that we will not accept certificates of insurance unless attached to a Policy Change Request to alter the policyholder coverage. As well, we will not accept special wording that a certificate holder has required from our policyholder.

Many states recognize the potential issues certificates create and they have guidelines and laws as to what can and cannot appear on these certificates. In addition to agents and brokers, some of the laws and rules are aimed at the requestors to prevent demands for unreasonable or misleading language. Special wording may expose agents or brokers to errors and omissions losses as it can potentially appear to alter or amend coverage.

A certificate of insurance is issued as a matter of information only and gives no rights to the certificate holder. A certificate does not amend, extend or alter the coverage, terms, exclusions and conditions afforded by the policy or policies referenced within the certificate.
