Practice safe driving this fall

Fall is the perfect time of year to jump in the car for a drive to see the beautiful foliage. Before you head off, it’s important to make sure you and your vehicle are ready to hit the road.

Share these tips with your policyholders to stay safe while driving this fall.

  1.  Make sure your vehicle is ready for the trip.
    • Ensure fluid levels are correct.
    • Verify the lights and wipers work.
    • Check that the tires are in good condition with good air pressure.
    • Test the brakes to make sure they respond.
    • Confirm there is no leaking fluid.
    • Schedule a check-up with your local mechanic before heading out.
  1.  Ensure there are no distractions.
    • Keep your attention on the road 100% of the time.
    • Do not text and drive.
    • Do not eat and drive.
    • Passengers should give directions and pick music so the driver stays focused.
  1.  Keep enough distance between you and the car ahead of you.
    • Create a cushion of space between you and the vehicle ahead of you using the “three-second rule.”
      • When the vehicle in front of you passes a stationary object, you should be able to count to three before you pass the same object.
      • Allow more space if there is rain, ice or snow.
  1.  Plan your route and rest stops ahead of time.
    • Stopping for breaks helps prevent drowsy driving. Get out of the car to walk around and stretch after long periods of driving.
    • Inspect the vehicle during breaks.
    • Stay hydrated and take time to eat a real meal to keep energy levels up.
  1.  Store your items appropriately.
    • Make sure all of your cargo is safely stored in the trunk or a place in the vehicle where it will not shift around.
    • Do not reach to the floor or in the seat behind you to pick up items that may have moved around during your drive.
    • Make sure you have your license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance in a safe place.
